ETTRICK, VA- The Virginia State University Athletic Department held its 18
th Annual Athletic Scholarship Golf Tournament today at the Dogwood Trace Golf Course in Petersburg, VA.
This year's title sponsor was Concord Crossroads located in Dumfries, VA.
17 teams competed in this year's tournament. The course consisted of 18 holes and teams teed off at 10:30 AM.
VSU Athletic Department staff and coaches managed the event and were on-site to greet and actively engage with all of the participants.
The morning started with opening statements from the Associate Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Peggy Davis and President Dr. Makola Abdullah followed by greetings from all of the head coaches.
"I do not believe that winning is important and everything else is secondary," said President Abdullah. "I think character is far more important than winning but winning is important. I need the teams to win so that the kids understand that hard work pays off. I am proud that we have a bunch of coaches that don't just concentrate on winning but concentrate on character. They make sure that our young people are prepared for the world that they are going off into."
The event featured raffle prizes, prizes for the longest drive on the 9
th and 16
th holes, prizes for the closest to the pin, and overall team awards.
All proceeds raised from the golf tournament will go towards the athletic scholarship fund and enhancing the VSU experience for all student-athletes.
