Trojans Sweep Bluefield St. 2-0, Outlasting the Big Blue 7-6 in Game 1's 10 Innings

ETTRICK, VA- The Trojans secured a 3-1 series record over Bluefield State after sweeping the Big Blue Monday afternoon, highlighted by a gritty 7-6 win that went to 10 innings in game one.

Game 1 Final Score: Trojans 7 – Big Blue 6
Team Stat Snapshot: VSU 10 hits, 5 RBIs – Bluefield 7 hits, 3 RBIs
Player Highlights: Ricky Jones led the charge with 3 runs. Christian Henderson reeled in 4 hits and all 3 of VSU's RBIs

How It Happened: Both teams defensive efforts led to three innings with no score and a single hit from both teams in the first inning.  Bluefield State took advantage of an error to advance their center fielder. Another error gave the Big Blue a quick 2-0 lead, followed by a double score off a line drive to right field extending the lead to 4-0.

Despite an explosive fourth inning from Bluefield State, the Trojans were able to put together a pair of runs to close out the inning initiated by a single from sophomore left fielder David Johnson. Henderson's at-bat resulted in a single that sent Johnson and Jones home for VSU, 4-2 BSU.

Trojan errors continued to ail VSU as Bluefield extended their lead 5-2 in the sixth inning off an error from center field. However, the Trojans maintained their composure while scoring three unanswered runs from Jones and Hammond in the sixth and seventh innings to tie the game at 5-all.

Scoreless eighth and ninth innings prolonged game one of the doubleheader, but despite the dry spell, VSU's pitching efforts were strong. Tahraun Hammond pitched a pair of consecutive strikeouts to give the Trojans a solid momentum boost going into the final inning.

Bluefield scored a single run at the top of the inning, but the Trojans were able to score a run from Pedro Mendez and a walk from Liam Simpson to clinch the 7-6 victory
