The Short Story: The Trojans earned their FIRST RANKED WIN in recent history against Savannah State after accounting for 16 hits. For the second season straight,
Ricky Jones hit the first homerun of the season as he legged out an inside-the-park homerun which drove in three runs. Jones ended the game with a career-high tying five RBI with two doubles.
FIRST GLANCE
- Freshman Infielder Norman Jackson record two hits, scored two runs and drove a run going 2-of-5 in the contest
- Sophomore Infielder and Pitcher Tahraun Hammond went 3-of-5 with three runs scored, a walk and a run batted in along with a double. On the Mound, Hammond came in for three innings of work and sent four batters packing while giving up only one hit.
- Sophomore Designated Hitter Morris Ford, Jr. went a career-high 3-of-4 scoring one run while also driving in a run as well. He also recorded his first double of the season.
- Sophomore Pitcher Joseph Hastings was almost untouchable in his outing as he saw six innings of work and struck out six while allowing only four hits, two walks and gave up just two earned runs in the big win.
- 9-of-12 batters recorded at least one hit in the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Ricky Jones put a jolt into the ball that went high and deep into left field and fell just short of the fence. Though the ball did not clear the fence, Jones was able to leg out a inside-the-park homerun that scored Tahraun Hammond and Norman Jackson to make the score 3-0 in the top of the first inning. The Tigers were able to cut into the lead in the bottom of the first inning with an RBI single into left field which made the score 3-1.
- The top of the fourth inning saw Norman Jackson sacrifice bunt back to the pitcher which allowed Bryce Wilmoth to come around and score to make the score 4-1. Avante Banks would come around to score on the very next at-bat due to an error by the SSU third baseman to extend the VSU lead to 5-1.
- Morris Ford, Jr. doubled down the right field line to score Ricky Jones to make the score 6-1 in the top of the fifth inning.
- SSU would cut into the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning by doubling down the left field line scoring one runner while another runner advanced to third with no outs. The Tigers scored again on the very next at-bat with a ground out to the third baseman to make the score 6-3.
- The Trojans were able to strike back after Ryan Messer singled to right field to score Morris Ford, Jr. to make their lead 7-3.
- The Trojans found heat yet again in the top of the eighth inning after Tahraun Hammond got Virginia State started after driving his former High School teammate in Avante Banks in to score on a single.
- Following a double from Ricky Jones, Dawsyn Hock drove both Hammond and Jones in on a single into left field to make the score 10-3.
- Savannah State brought another run across home plate after scoring on a sacrifice fly out to center field to make the score 10-4.
- VSU would add insurance runs in the top of the ninth inning as Ricky Jones added a pir of RBI to his statline following a single from Norman Jackson and a double from Tahraun Hammond to make it 12-4
- Tahraun Hammond nearly struck out the side to end the game after the first two batters struck out looking. Ricky Jones recorded the final putout of the game to make the final score 12-4.

The Short Story: Following the huge upset, the Trojans were handed a 20-0 loss after allowing 17 hits. The Tigers scored in five of six of the innings.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- With an obvious chip on their shoulders, the Tigers took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.
- The Tigers went on to add five runs to their total to make the score 8-0 in the bottom of the third inning.
- In the bottom of the fourth inning, Savannah State scored three more runs to make the score 11-0.
- The bottom of the fifth inning saw five more runs from the Tigers to now make the score 16-0.
- The Tigers added four more insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to make the final score 20-0.
