Combined 53 Points from Todd and Blakemore Not Enough as Trojans Drop Hard Fought Battle to ECSU in Double Overtime 92-88

ELIZABETH CITY, NC – The Trojans Women's Basketball team nearly saw 30-point games from Raija Todd (27, career-high) and Sommer Blakemore (26) but were unfortunately unable to pull out the double overtime win against Elizabeth City State losing 92-88. The Trojans will now prepare to give their home fan a pleasant lasting memory with Senior Night coming up. 
 

First Quarter
J'Auana Robinson was able to score the first bucket of the game as the two team would go back-and-forth to start the first quarter. Kalyn Ervin and Raija Todd was able to give the Trojans slight breathing room taking a 8-5 lead with 6:16 left in the first quarter. The lead was short lived however as the Lady Vikings scored eight straight to take a five-point lead. The quarter saw ties at 13 and 16 before ECSU was able to take a 18-16 lead in the first quarter.


Second Quarter
The Trojans got out to a pretty slow start to start the second quarter allowing the Lady Vikings to mount a 9-0 run to take a 25-16 lead early in the second quarter. The Trojans would go on to score eight straight points thanks to buckets from Sommer Blakemore and Raija Todd as they were able to knot the score at 28. The Trojans trailed just 33-30 heading into the halftime break.
 
Third Quarter
While the Lady Viking were able to start the half with a three-pointer, the Trojans went on a 7-0 run curtsy of five points from J'Auana Robinson to make the score 37-36 in favor of VSU. The two would continue to battle it out as the score came to 46-46 with 2:48 left in the third quarter. While the Trojans were able to take a three-point lead with under 2:00 to go, the Lady Viking were able to tie the contest at 51 heading into the fourth quarter.
 
Fourth Quarter
ECSU got off to another hot start to the quarter after going on an 11-2 run to start to quarter to take a 62-53 lead with 5:35 left in the regulation. The Lady Viking took a 10-point lead before the Trojans were able to walk the lead down to three with just 2:02 left in regulation. The Trojans trailed by five with under a minute to go. Following a steal and score by Kalyn Ervin to put her squad down by just three, the Trojans were able to force another turnover which led to the veteran Sommer Blakemore hitting a three-pointer to tie the game with :41 second left in the game. As J'Auana Robinson forced yet another turnover, the Trojans were unable to hit the game winning shot but were able to send the game to overtime.
 
Overtime
Kalyn Ervin started the overtime period five unanswered points to give her team a 76-71 lead. The Lady Vikings would respond with six points straight of their own to take a two-point lead. The two team would go on to tie at 78, 80 and 82 as Raija Todd hit two huge free throws to force another overtime period.

Second Overtime
While the Lady Vikings were able to start with a 4-0 run, the Trojans were able to gain the lead 87-86 with 3:00 left. ECSU would score five straight to take a four-point lead with just under 2:00 to go. The Trojans would cut the lead to just three with 1:11 left to go but the Lady Vikings were able to hold on to the lead and ultimately take the victory 92-88.

 

Stat Leaders
Raija Todd scored a career-high 27 points shooting 10-16 from the field in the loss. She went 3-5 from deep and grabbed three rebounds and dished five assists with a steal. Sommer Blakemore continued her elite scoring prowess after scoring 26 points shooting 2-5 from three-point range. She went 6-6 from the free throw line and grabbed four boards and dished a game-high seven assists along with five steals. Kalyn Ervin scored 14 points shooting 5-11 from the field and 2-5 from three-point range. He added four rebounds and dished three assists along with a block and a steal. J'Auana Robinson accounted for 10 points with a team-high six rebounds and two assists in the contest. On the defensive end she was able to attain a pair of steals.

Up Next
The Trojans will honor the hard work and dedication of their Seniors in the final home game of the season against Bowie State Wednesday, February 15 starting at 5:30 p.m. The senior day ceremony will be held between the women's and the men's game.
