Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Trojans dominate Bulldogs

Wilson, N.C. (Dec. 6, 2023)- The Virginia State University women's basketball team keep up their hot start with a 75-56 victory over the Bulldogs of Barton College. This was only the second meeting between the teams.

After an opening three pointer from Barton, VSU scored the next eight points with two three pointers from Tiyanna James to make the score eight to three with five minutes left in the opening quarter. Over the next two minutes the Trojans used three straight three pointers, two from Mihjae Hayes and one from Cabria Lewis, to make the score 18-7. To end the first quarter Virginia State was leading 21-7.

The Trojans were able to increase their lead to as much at 20 points, 31-11 with 6 minutes and 30 seconds left in the second quarter. However, for most of the second quarter it was a competitive 10 minutes as VSU only outscored Barton 18-13, for a halftime score of 39-20. James already reached the double figure mark at 13 points.

In the third quarter the Bulldogs jumped out and scored six straight points to open the quarter. However, VSU would get those six points back before the media timeout making the core 45-26 at the 4:45 mark. The Bulldogs ended the quarter by outscoring the Trojans by two points, 18-16, to reduce their deficit to 55-38.

To start the final quarter both teams were going back and forth in the first three minutes as BC scored four points and VSU scored five. Barton would continue to fight back but it was too little too late as VSU would emerge victorious 75-56.

James was tied for the game's leading scorer at 19 points with Amesha Miller close behind at 16. Miller also brought down 10 rebounds for a double-double. Alexis Blake also brought down 10 rebounds for the Trojans.

With the win VSU is now 7-0 and BC drops to 0-8. The Trojans return to the MPC for the first conference matchup of the season against Shaw on Monday December 11 at 5:30 p.m.
