Ettrick, Va. (Dec. 30, 2023)- The Virginia State University women's basketball team played their last game in 2023 against Chowan University and won 66-47. With this win Head Coach Nadine Domond has earned her 50th all time win.
The Hawks had an early six to two lead just two minutes into the game. However, over the final eight minutes VSU outscored Chowan 19-7 to hold a 21-13 advantage after the opening 10 minutes. Then after an Alexis Blake layup and Tiyanna James three pointer made the score 26-15 thirty seconds into the second period. That would be the last field goals for the Trojans as Chowan would end the half on a 14-1 run to hold a slim two-point advantage 29-27. 
Coming out of the locker room the Trojans would end the final 20 minutes outscoring the Hawks 39-18. To end the third quarter VSU came all the way back to hold a seven-point lead, 47-40. In the fourth quarter James would get the foul line twice to get the lead to the highest point at 21 points, 64-43 and 66-45. 
Four different players scored 10 or more points for Virginia State with James leading the way with 18 points. Mihjae Hayes (13), Cabria Lewis and Amesha Miller (10) also had 10 or more points.  
With the win VSU moves to 11-1 overall and the Hawks drop to 3-4 overall. Up next for the Trojans will be the beginning of a three-game road trip starting on Thursday January 4 at Johnson C Smith University at 5:30 p.m.
