Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

VSU wins tight contest at home versus SHU

Ettrick, Va. (Nov. 26, 2023)- The Virginia State University women's basketball team remained unbeaten after winning an 88-86 contest against Seton Hill University.

Going into the fourth quarter VSU held a 64-56 advantage. Two minutes into the final stanza the Griffins got the score 66-61. The Trojans were able to hold on to a big advantage until Seton Hill hit a three pointer at the 4:46 mark to make the score 74-71. The Griffins were able to make it a single possession game on multiple occasions, but it seemed the Trojans were able to answer until there was 51 seconds left and they converted an and-one opportunity to tie the game at 86 all.

In the final 51 seconds both teams would have good shots to win the game, but Tiyanna James was fouled with eight seconds left and knocked down her two foul shots. The Griffins would get the ball into the paint, but Mekalya Furman played stout defense and made the shot awkward and missed short.

With the game being tied at 40 all coming into the third quarter, and it was controlled by VSU and Mihjae Hayes as she scored 12 of her 24 points in that period. Including Hayes, five players score in double-figures for VSU.

With the win Virginia State is now 5-0 and Seton Hill now moves to 2-3. VSU next game will be Wednesday November 29 at Southern Wesleyan University at 5 pm.
