Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women’s Basketball routs Sheppard for opening day victory

Ettrick, Va. (Nov. 11, 2023)- The Virginia State University women's basketball team lead wire to wire in a 91-58 victory over the Rams of Shepard University.

In the first quarter VSU only gave up eight points while putting up 25 points themselves. The three-point shot was falling for the Trojans as Cabria Lewis had two while Raija Todd and Mekayla Furman added a three pointer as well. Going into the second quarter Virginia State continued to establish their dominance as they got up by 22 points, 32-10 four minutes into the quarter.

The Trojans would only give up nine points for the remainder of the quarter while they continue to score at will eventually going into halftime with a 47-19 advantage. However, Shepard would start to find some life in the third quarter as the teams started to play a back-and-forth game with each team finding an answer for a score. Shepard would find a way to score as they started to go to the line more, but VSU continued its fast pace game plan to finish the third quarter up by 34 points, 72-38.

In the fourth quarter VSU would continue to play fast until the very end and would win the game. The fourth quarter was the only quarter where Shepard outscored VSU. All 11 Trojans who appeared in the game scored at least two points. Amesha Miller, Furman and Lewis were all close to a double-double in game one. Miller finished with nine points and 10 rebounds, Furman finished with 12 points and nine assists and finally Lewis had a game high 17 points, seven rebounds and five steals.

The Trojans return to action tomorrow Nov. 12, as they play the Senators of Davis & Elkins at 5 p.m.
