Volleyball ends home stand with sweep

Ettrick, Va.- The Virginia State university volleyball team ended a four-game home stand with a sweep over conference opponent Lincoln University 25-15, 25-14, 25-20. 

After opening the match with a 10-6 lead, VSU then went on a 12-3 run with kills by four different players and Kenedy Hoge recorded two straight services aces in the first set. Lincoln answered with its own 5-0 run. The lions would end on three straight errors and the Trojans would emerge victorious in the first set. 

The second set was played more closely to start out as it was knotted at 5 all. The Trojans would go on another long 12-3 run. Gabrielle Bradley would start the run with a kill. During the run Helena Eubannks and Kelsea Saulny recorded kills and Hoge registered three more service aces. To end the set VSU went on a 5-0 run that started with a Eubanks kill followed by three straight attack errors and ended with a Bradley kill. 

The third set was a back-and-forth affair, with VSU leading 14-12 halfway through the set. Leila Jackson, Hoge and an attack error would give the Trojans some breathing room with a 17-13 advantage. Virginia State would hold on to this 4-point advantage until a quick 4-0 run to make the score 23-16 after Eubanks registered another kill and three errors by the Lions. Amaya Cooper would finish off not only the set but the match with a kill. 

As a team the Trojans hit .207 % and Eubanks hit an impressive .280 %. Eubanks also led the team with 10 kills, Cooper recorded seven and Peyton Reese had five kills and 14 assists. Jackson also tabbed 14 assists. Najlaa Williams had a game high 24 digs. 

With the win VSU moves up to 5-8 and 4-1 in the CIAA, the Lions are now 3-10 and 0-5 in the CIAA. Virginia State travels to newcomer Bluefield State on Monday October 9 with the starts time scheduled for 6 p.m.
