VSU Women’s Basketball Are 3-3 in CIAA Play After Falling to JCSU, 70-54

ETTRICK, VA (January 10, 2023)- The VSU women's basketball team move to a 7-8 overall record, 3-3 in the CIAA, after a conference loss to the Johnson C. Smith LAdyGolden Bulls on Tuesday evening. Despite falling short of a win, 70-54, VSU's Raija Todd controlled the game in scoring with 16 points.

First Half
The game got off to a slow start as the teams went coast to coast battling for a bucket. Raija Todd broke the scoring drought, securing the first basket of the game. At the first media timeout, the Trojans trailed, 5-4, but quickly stepped their game. Much needed buckets from Kylah Webb moved VSU ahead. At the end of the first quarter, the Trojans were up 18-16.

The visiting Lady Golden Bulls closed the scoring gap to tie the game 21-all. Shayla Sweeney drove in for a layup to regain the Trojans lead, but JCSU quickly answered back. With the help of a basket from Todd, the Trojan were up 25-24 with 4:36 left in the half.  The battle continued as VSU entered the locker room at halftime with a leading score of 34-32.

Second Half
The beginning the third quarter mimicked the second, as the scoring gap closed and the game saw several lead changes. With 5:12 left in the quarter, the Trojans trailed 44-40. The game slowly began to rule in favor of the visiting Golden Bulls. At the end of the third quarter, VSU was down by 8 points (54-46).

The final quarter breezed by as VSU was not able to regain the control, ultimately ending the game with a final score of 70-54.

Leaders
The VSU Trojans were led by Raija Todd with 16 points. Controlling the boards for the Trojans was Boogie Robinson with 9 rebounds to accompany her 2 steals. Trinity Moody stepped in to help, leading the team with 4 assists.

Up Next
The Trojans will return to action on Saturday, January 14 to take on the Lady Panthers of Virginia Union University for the 2023 Freedom Classic.  The CIAA matchup is set for 12:00pm at the VSU Multipurpose Center.
