ETTRICK, VA – The Virginia State University Volleyball team (1-5) lost a tough match to nationally ranked West Virginia State University (21-25, 13-25, 10-25) after showing they could compete with the Yellow Jackets in the first set.
Sophomore Helena Eubanks had a strong outing as she finished with a team-high six kills while freshman Amaya Cooper ended with a total of five kills for the game. Alexis McNair and Taniyah Epps tied for the team-high in blocks with two apiece while Makenzy Johnson had 13 assists which also led the Trojans. Najlaa Williams led the Trojans defensive efforts with seven digs.
Game Notes
- Makenzy Johnson finished with double-digit assists for the 5th time this season.
- Najlaa Williams led the team for the 2nd consecutive game in digs with seven. Shed ended the day with an overall of 14 digs.
- Amaya Cooper was amongst the top three in kills in the match for the Trojans for the 2nd consecutive time with five which was 2nd highest on the team.
How It Happened
First Set | The Trojans got out to good start as they got ahead early with a 5-4 score. Then the Trojans dropped two straight points to West Virginia State and then from there the Yellow Jackets did not look back as the Trojans struggled to gain any type of momentum. This allowed the Yellow Jackets to take the first set 21-25.
Second Set | The Trojans got out to yet another slow start falling behind 2-6 early. They failed to gain any type of edge which allowed the Yellow Jackets to gain full control of the set. The Trojans went on to fall in that set 13-25.
Third Set | The Trojans still were not able to gain any momentum and at times looked overpowered by the Yellow Jackets. They fell behind 2-8 early and were not able to go on any type of run to come back. The Trojan ultimately dropped the set 10-25 which gave the Yellow Jackets their second win of the day.
What's Next
The Trojans volleyball team is looking to bounce back as they have a short turn around and prepare to play Shippensburg University at 1:00pm on Saturday, September 3 in the VSU Volleyball Classic.
