Blakemore Nears Triple-Double, Trojans Score Season-High in, 95-62 Win

ETTRICK, VA – Virginia State women's basketball team scored the most points in a game since 2018 as they smashed the Big Blue, 95-62. The Trojans were able to outscore BSC 30-8 in the fourth quarter. The win put an end to a three-game losing streak and brought their overall record to 11-12.
 

Natalia Leaks scored a game-high 23 points, as she was superb from the field shooting 10-of-14 from the field. Leaks ended with five rebounds and five assists as well. Kaaliya Williams scored 16 points along with five rebounds. Sommer Blakemore was just two steals and two rebounds away from a tripe-double as the junior guard finished with 12 points, eight rebounds and eight assists. Shayla Sweeney led the bench mob with 18 points and five rebounds in the contest. The Trojans finished 12-of-13 from the foul line and forced 26 turnovers.
 


How It Happened
  • At the start of the game, Kaaliya Williams got the Trojans started with four points which helped the Trojans keep the score close at 7-6 in favor of the Big Blue.  
 
  • Shayla Sweeney was able to score five points in the final five minutes of the quarter to bring the score to 15-13 with the Big Blue in front at the end of the first 10 minutes.
 
  • J'Auana Robinson checked into the game and immediately hit a three-pointer to bring the BSC lead to two points. The Big Blue would go on score six unanswered points to make the score 26-18 with 7:11 left to go. 
 
  • The Trojans would proceed to go on a 14-2 run to bring the score to 34-31 with 1:03 left in the half. The Trojans took a 38-31 into the locker room at halftime.
   
 
  • Following a BSC three-pointer, they were able to bring the VSU lead to just six points at 52-46 with 5:26 left in the third quarter.  
 
  • With 2:11 left to go Shayla Sweeney hit another three-pointer to extend the VSU lead to 16 points. Despite the Trojans stellar shooting from the field (61%) and from three (100%), the home team would take a 65-54 lead into the final quarter.
 
  • Prior to the final media timeout, the Trojans extended their lead to 25 points scoring 10 unanswered to make the score 81-56 with 5:10 left in the game.
 
  • The Trojans had their most dominant fourth quarter of the year holding the Big Blue to 11% from the field and 0% from three-point range. The Trojans went on to close the game out 95-62.
