BALTIMORE (Feb. 24) – The upsets continue in the women's bracket of the CIAA Tournament.
No. 11 seed Virginia State scored just enough points in a low-scoring game to eliminate No. 3 seed Bowie State 50-33 in the women's quarterfinals at Royal Farms Arena on Thursday. The Trojans join No. 12 seed Livingstone as the bottom-seeded teams in the semifinals.
The Trojans (12-17 overall) will take on No. 2 seed Elizabeth City State in Friday's semifinal game at 2 p.m. The No. 3 seed Bulldogs finished their season at 13-11 overall.
Points were hard to come by for both teams, but the Trojans were able to find the edge and take the victory. VSU heated up in the fourth quarter, as they went 42.9% from the floor to keep the Bulldogs from making a run. The Trojans outscored the Bulldogs 29-20 in the second half after leading 21-13 at halftime.
Meanwhile, Bowie State struggled against a tenacious Trojan defense. The Bulldogs shot 16.1% from the field, committed 16 turnovers and got outrebounded 51-38. The Trojans scored 12 points off the turnovers in the contest.
The Bulldogs were 6-of-27 beyond the three-point arc and 9-of-16 from the free throw line. The Trojans shot 33.3% from the floor, made 2 of 6 three-pointers and hit 16-of-30 free throws.
The Food Lion Game MVP Natalia Leaks and Shayla Sweeney both posted double-doubles to pace the Trojans. Leaks finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds while Sweeney totaled 11 points and 10 rebounds. Sommer Blakemore scored 10 points and Valerie Samuel collected seven points, seven rebounds and two steals.
Neither team found the range in the first half. The score was 9-5 after the first period and 21-13 at halftime in favor of Virginia State.
Blakemore scored eight points in the first half for the Trojans, who shot 28% in the first and second quarters. Sweeney added five points and seven rebounds; her counterpart Leaks recorded four points and five rebounds.
