ETTRICK, VA – The Virginia State women's basketball team dropped a double overtime heartbreaker to Bowie State on senior night, 65-64. After having two impact players in,
Shayla Sweeney and
Kaaliya Williams, foul out, the Trojans were still able to hold BSU to 12% from the field in both overtime periods combined.
Natalia Leaks ended her senior night with a game-high 22 points on 11-of-25 (44%) shooting from the field along with eight rebounds, three assists and three steals. Prior to fouling out,
Shayla Sweeney scored 14 points on 5-of-10 (50%) shooting from the field while also going 2-of-2 (100%) from beyond the arc. She also added three rebounds along with two assists.
Sommer Blakemore scored 12 points along with a pair of rebounds, six assists and two steals in the contest. She also heated up from three-point range knocking down 3-of-6 of her shots as one of them brought the game to just one possession late in the fourth quarter.
Valerie Samuel earned six assists along with five points and four boards. The squad shot a season-high 53.8% from downtown in the double overtime loss.
How It Happened
- Early on in the first quarter the Trojans started off cold allowing the Bulldogs to score seven points unanswered. The squad would go on to battle back thanks to five-straight points from Shayla Sweeney to bring the game to within two with the score at 14-12 with 4:29 left in the first quarter. The Trojans trailed by four at the end of the first quarter with the score at 18-14.
- Sommer Blakemore hit a three-pointer early in the second quarter to cut the BSU lead to just two points. That proved to be the only motivation the Bulldogs needed as the scored eight answered points to earn the largest lead of the game at 27-17 with 7:46 to go in the second quarter. Feeling the game slipping away, Sweeney, Leaks and Bianca White contributed in bringing the game to 28-24 with three minutes left in the half. The Bulldogs went on extend their lead to 32-24 heading into the locker room at halftime.
- To start the half, Leaks found a rhythm scoring back-to-back points to bring the BSU lead to just two possessions. The Bulldogs would then go on a 7-2 run to bring the score to 39-30 with 5:39 left to go in the third quarter. The Trojans would answer right back with an 8-0 run of their own to bring the deficit to just one. Heading into the fourth quarter, the Trojans were down 43-42.
- After allowing BSU to score six-straight, Valerie Samuel would stop the bleeding with a bucket to make it a two possession game. With 4:01 left in the fourth quarter, the Trojans would score seven unanswered points to knot the game at 55. The Trojans would lock up on defense to force a shot-clock violation, which gave the ball to the home squad the ball with :33 to go. The Trojans missed a floater from a step within the free throw line, which allowed the Bulldogs to force an overtime period.
- Points were hard to come by in the first overtime period as the Bulldogs hit three free throws with 2:57 left to go. Valerie Samuel then hit a three-pointer to tie the game at 58. Azhane Bacot hit a tough layup with :46 left to go that put the Trojans up by one. After the Bulldogs split a pair of free throws if forced a second overtime with the game tied at 60.
- Kamryn Anthony sunk a three-pointer in the opening possession of the second overtime period. A few possessions later, Sommer Blakemore hit 1-of-2 free throws, which put the Trojans up by four with 3:16 left. The Bulldogs would then hit two free throws and a layup to knot the game at 64. The Trojans fouled BSU with .7 left on the clock. After splitting the free throws to go up by one, the Trojans were unable to hit a three to win it, which gave the Bulldogs the victory, 65-64.
