ETTRICK, VA – Despite a huge fourth quarter, the VSU Women's Basketball team was not able to make up for their cold first half. The Trojans dropped their third game of the season 59-45 to Edward Waters (Fla.) to conclude the CIAA/SIAC Challenge.
Sommer Blakemore led all scorers with 19 points in the contest shooting an impressive 7-of-16 from the field. She led the team with three steals and three assists along with four rebounds in the contest.
J'Auana Robinson scored seven points and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds along with a steal.
Raija Todd scored eight points in the contest while
Kamani Jones scored eight points going 2-of-4 from the field. Jones led the team with four made free throws and brought down four rebounds in the contest.
The second quarter of play truly proved to be the downfall for the Trojans as they went 0-of-13 from the field. That being said, the Trojans shot 56% from the field in the fourth quarter as they outscored the Lady Tigers 25-18. Unfortunately, the Trojans scored under 10 points in the first three quarters of play.
How It Happened
- The game started with the two teams trading baskets until the score came to seven all. The Lady Tigers would go on a 7-0 run to end the quarter with a 14-7 lead.
- The Trojans struggled to get the lid off the basket as they allowed EWU to mount a 12-1 run to take a 26-8 lead in the second quarter with 2:13 left in the half. The Trojans were able to break double digits late in the second quarter as they allowed the Lady Tigers to take a 31-11 lead into the second half.
- Sommer Blakemore would lead the comeback as she began to chop away at the lead with a pair of buckets out of the half 38-17. Following a three pointer by Blakemore, the Lady Tigers took a 41-20 lead into the final quarter of play.
- J'Auana Robinson began to heavily involve herself in the scoring column scoring with five points of her own early in the fourth quarter. The Trojans brought themselves to within 12 points after utilizing a 12-5 to go down 12 with 2:40 left to go. As the Trojans would do all they could to cut the EWU lead down, it proved to be too little too late as the Lady Tigers took the game 59-45.
