Poor Rebounding From VSU Women's Basketball Leads to 57-34 Loss to Chowan

MURFREESBORO, NC – Virginia State women's basketball got behind early 19-5 and weren't able to fight back as they dropping their second road game of the season 57-34.
 


Raija Todd leads the team with seven points along with a pair of assists. Shayla Sweeney scored six points and grabbed a pair of boards. Sommer Blakemore and Kamani Jones both led the squad with five rebounds as Sommer also added four points and two steals. Kiana Walker also scored four points to go along with two assists.



The Trojans shot 81% from the free throw line but 20% from the field. VSU forced 14 turnovers to go along with eight steals. The story of the game was rebounding, the Trojans were outrebounded 65-30 in the contest.   

 
How It Happened
 
  • After both teams struggled to get the lid off the basket to start the game until the Hawks mounted a 15-3 run to take a 19-5 in the first quarter
 
  • In the second quarter, the Trojans were able to cut the lead to just eight behind back-to-back buckets by Kiana Walker. After Sommer Blakemore hit two-of-two free the Trojans were only down by six with 1:53 left in the half. The Hawks took a 26-18 lead into the locker room at half time.
 
  • The Trojans were able to cut the lead to six one last time before scoring six straight to make the score 36-24 with 3:17 left in the quarter. The Hawks went up 40-26 heading into the final quarter of play.
 
  • With 3:19 left to go, the Hawks stretched their lead all the way out to 22. Chowan would go on to close out the game 57-34.
 

Up Next
The VSU Women's Basketball team will prepare to host the CIAA/SIAC Challenge this Friday and Saturday as the Trojans will welcome Virginia Union, Edward Waters (Fla.) and Benedict. The Trojans will take on Benedict Friday at 8:00 p.m. before playing Edward Waters (Fla.) Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
