ETTRICK, V.A. – Virginia State women's basketball dropped their first game of the season to Indiana University of Pennsylvania by a score of 51-42 Saturday afternoon.
Kaaliya Williams led the way for the Trojans being the only player to finish in double digits (11).
Jabarria Brown and
Natalia Leaks finished with eight apiece while Valarie Samuel finished with seven. Williams and
Bailee White tied for a team-high five rebounds.
The Trojans dominated the free throw line knocking down 89% of their shots. The Trojans forced 11 turnovers in the first half. The bench of VSU outscored IUP's bench 20-6.
How It Happened
- After scoring the first points of the game, a 5-0 run would help the Crimson Hawks take the lead 14-7 at the conclusion of the first quarter.
- In the second quarter, IUP went on 7-0 run to push the lead out to 11 points as the hosts took a 27-16 lead into the half.
- Heading into the break, Williams and Samuel took seven points apiece into the locker room while the team forced 11 turnovers as well.
- In the start of the second half, the IUP lead extended to 20 off efficient shooting from the Crimson Hawks. Thanks to a 9-3 Trojan run, the squad brought the score to 43-29 to conclude the 3rd quarter.
- To open the fourth quarter, the Trojans momentum carried over as VSU went on an 8-2 run to bring them to within striking distance at 47-42.
- IUP would hold off the comeback attempt to take the win 51-42.
