Softball Hits Double Homeruns in Pace Doubleheader

GAME 1 | GAME 2

ETTRICK, VA (March 6, 2020)- Despite the VSU Trojan softball team falling to Pace University in the a doubleheader matchup, the Trojans battled in both games. In game 1, VSU lost 5-3 to Pace and fell short of a win in game 2 with a final score of 4-3.

The contests move the Trojans with a 2-10 overall record.

Game 1

VSU got a late start to the game after the visiting Pace Setters took an early lead, 4-0, in the first 5 innings. Although Pace added an additional run at the top of the 6th inning, the Trojans battled back with 3 runs.

Samantha Cunningham took control of the game for VSU with a double to center field, giving Julia Jones, Taylor Bilyard and Sydnee Brown space to advance home. The momentum was short lived as the 7th inning was scoreless. VSU took a 5-3 loss in game 1 while Brooklyn Bilyard took the pitching loss.

 

Game 2

Having another slow start to the game, Pace scored 4 runs over the Trojans in first and third innings. After a scoreless fourth inning, VSU stepping in to hold Pace to their 4 runs while advancing home to close the scoring gap.

With 2 outs on the board and 1 on base, Natalee Murphy hit a single to the left line, giving Samantha Cunningham space to score. Securing her first home run of the season, Shaniya Marble grasped a left field homer to close the scoring gap, 4-2, at the bottom of the 6th inning. In the final inning of the contest, Julia Jones joined in on the homerun action, hitting her first homerun of the season over the centerfield gate.

Despite battling back in the final innings, VSU took a 4-3 loss to Pace.

Kennedy Presson took the game loss for the Trojans after relieving Zanyah Ailsworth for the final 4 innings.

 

Up Next

The VSU softball team will host the Trojan Spring Tournament on March 7-8. Games will be played at the VSU Softball Field and the Colonial Heights Civic Field featuring Bluefield State College, Chowan University, Pace University, Shippensburg University and the VSU Trojans. The first pitch of the Trojans matchup will be 10am against Chowan.
