ETTRICK, VA (March, 10, 2020)- The VSU baseball team opened their 3 game series against the Panthers of Claflin University with a 20-1 victory on Tuesday afternoon.
The Trojans move to a 10-10 overall record.
Virginia State's win was thanks in part to Kevin Russell, who drove in five runners. Russell drove in runs on a single in the first inning, a single in the third, a walk in the fourth, and a single in the seventh.
Taking an early lead, VSU opened up scoring in the first inning scoring seven runs. Russell secured 2 RBI's in the initial inning when he singled to in two when he singled up the middle.
Tyquon Wilkins earned the pitching win for Trojans. He lasted seven innings, allowing four hits and zero runs while striking out six. Markyis Dillard threw two innings in relief out of the bullpen.
VSU collected 14 hits overall against Claflin. Russell, Keyon Smith, Delmarcus Talley, Carl Granderson, and Cecil Henderson all collected multiple hits for the Trojans. Smith and Russell each collected three hits to lead the Trojans.
The two teams meet again tomorrow, March 11, to complete the three game set. First pitch is slated for 1pm.
