Baseball Takes Season Opener Loss to Claflin, 6-4

ORANGEBURG, SC (February 1, 2020) - The Virginia State University baseball team opened their 2020 season on the road with a single game matchup against the Panthers of Claflin University. The 9-inning contest resulted in a 6-4 loss for the Trojans, moving them to a 0-1 record.

The Game
Despite the Panther gaining a run at the bottom of the first inning, the Trojans defensive controlled the field, holding the home team to 4 hits in 4 innings.
Although VSU remained scoreless for the first 4 innings, they kicked their game into high gear with a run by Carl Granderson and Tavon Dawson to take the 2-1 lead at the top of the 5th inning. The Panthers answered back with a run, closing out the 5th inning with a 2-all score.
Claflin jumped ahead with two runs at the bottom of the 6th and 7th inning, putting the Trojans in a 6-2 scoring deficit.
The scoreless 8th inning did not hinder VSU from finding space for Aaron Harris and Darius Holeman to advance home at the top of the 9th. Despite the Trojans effort to take the lead, it was short lived, causing the Trojans to fall 6-4 in their season opener.
After pitching the initial 6 innings, Jarren Norman took the loss VSU.
