ORANGEBURG, SC (February 1, 2020) - The Virginia State University baseball team opened their 2020 season on the road with a single game matchup against the Panthers of Claflin University. The 9-inning contest resulted in a 6-4 loss for the Trojans, moving them to a 0-1 record.
The Game
Despite the Panther gaining a run at the bottom of the first inning, the Trojans defensive controlled the field, holding the home team to 4 hits in 4 innings.
Although VSU remained scoreless for the first 4 innings, they kicked their game into high gear with a run by
Carl Granderson and
Tavon Dawson to take the 2-1 lead at the top of the 5
th inning. The Panthers answered back with a run, closing out the 5
th inning with a 2-all score.
Claflin jumped ahead with two runs at the bottom of the 6
th and 7
th inning, putting the Trojans in a 6-2 scoring deficit.
The scoreless 8
th inning did not hinder VSU from finding space for
Aaron Harris and
Darius Holeman to advance home at the top of the 9th. Despite the Trojans effort to take the lead, it was short lived, causing the Trojans to fall 6-4 in their season opener.
After pitching the initial 6 innings,
Jarren Norman took the loss VSU.
