NORFOLK, VA (September 7, 2019)- The Virginia State University Trojan football team took charge of the fourth quarter in their 2019 season opener game against the Spartans of Norfolk State University for the Battle of the State. The highly anticipated game marked the 53rd series matchup between the teams.
Marquez Phillips found the end zone after receiving a 19 yard pass from Jordan Davis to give VSU their first 4th quarter touchdown. Jordan Davis made another connection, this time for a 5 yard touchdown pass to Christian Harden for the last score of the game.
Overall, the Trojans took a 44-21 loss in the highly anticipated season opener game against Norfolk State.
Despite NSU securing the first touchdown, with a 33 yard pass in the first quarter, quarterback Cordelral Cook tied the game for VSU, running in for a 7 yard touchdown after 6 plays for 40 yards in the 2nd quarter.
The Spartans took control of the game to take an extensive lead in the remaining 2nd and 3rd quarters, while the VSU wide receivers worked to close the scoring gap in the 4th quarter.
Offensively, Cook finished with 16-of-25 pass completions for 207 yards, while defensively, K'Jon Coley recorded a game high of 9 total tackles, 5 solo and 4 assisted.
Currently, the VSU vs. NSU series record is tied 26-26-1, as both the teams and supports look forward to their faceoff next season.
The Trojans will return to action on September 14 to take on UNC Pembroke. Kick-off is slated for 6pm at Rogers Stadium. The home opener will feature Military Appreciation, VSU Faculty and Staff Appreciation, as well as VSU family Weekend.
