SALEM, VA (April 30, 2019) - The Virginia State University Trojan softball team ended their 2019 season with an 11-6 conference record (19-23 overall) after competing for the 2019 CIAA Championship title.
After taking down Johnson C. Smith University and Claflin University on day 1 of the championship, the Trojans advanced to the day 2 winner's bracket to face the Rams of Winston-Salem State University.
VSU was scoreless in the 2:30pm matchup against the Rams, falling 10-0 in 5 innings. Offensively, Vanessa Ruby led the team with 2 hits, one of which was a double at the top of the 5th inning. The loss moved VSU to the loser's bracket where they had to face the Panthers of Claflin University for the second time in post season play.
The Trojans took an early 3 run led at the top of the first inning with the advancement of Stephanie Sandridge, Kara Morris and Sydnee Brown across home plate. VSU held the Claflin down offensively, until the Panthers scored at the bottom of the 3rd inning. Despite the Claflin gaining another run at the bottom of the 4th, the Trojans held strong to their 3-2 lead.
With the bases loaded at the top of the 5th inning, Brooklyn Bilyard crossed home plate due to the Panthers walking Julia Jones. Although Claflin tied the game 4-all at the bottom of the 5th, Darnae Jones regained the lead for VSU. The battle for control of the game was evident as Jade Smith moved the Trojans ahead with a 6-4 lead at the top of the 7th. Claflin rallied back to tie the game 6-all, sending the contest into another inning.  VSU was not able to take the game, allowing the Panther's sacrifice bunt to give them the 7-6 victory. The loss ended the Trojans season and battle for the CIAA Championship Title.
