Box Score 3 ETTRICK, VA- The VSU Trojan baseball team sweep Stratford University in their 3 game weekend series. Great pitching and timely hitting lead the Trojans to their victories.
VSU took a 4-1 victory in the opening game. Starter Jeremiah Hardy was a dominate force on the mound. Hardy pitched a complete game to earn the win. Hardy surrendered one run on four hits while striking out ten Cardinal batters. Offensively the Trojans were led by Brian Goodwyn and Kevin Russell who both had multiple hits in the game one win.
Game two would be another win for the Trojans. Virginia State took the night game in a dramatic fashion. The victory came courtesy of a walk-off hit in extra innings. The game came down to the Trojans final inning of the contest. With two outs on the board, Brian Goodwyn singled to bring in the tying run to have the game knotted at three. In the bottom of the eighth inning with runners in scoring position, Aaron Harris barreled a ball in the left center field gap to secure the 4-3 victory.  Jose Martinex got the win for the Trojans. He allowed one hit and no runs over two innings. Jason Martinez threw five and a third innings of relief out of the bullpen to keep the game within reach. Virginia State tallied nine hits in the nightcap. Rashad Stewart, Sisqo Scott, and Jahleel Sever each collected two hits for the Trojans.
Game three of the weekend series would end in similar fashion. In the first inning, Virginia State got their offense started when Aaron Harris singled on a 0-1 count, scoring one run. Virginia State built a four-run lead in the sixth inning and held off Stratford's charge. Stratford managed four runs in the failed comeback. The game was tied at four with the Trojans batting in the bottom of the ninth. A walk-off error propelled Virginia State  to a decisive, dramatic victory over Stratford, 5-4.
Rashad Stewart was the winning pitcher for the Trojans. He allowed two hits and two runs over two and a third innings, striking out one and walking one. Jarren Norman started the game for the Virginia State Trojans. He surrendered two runs on six hits over six and two-thirds innings, striking out three. Harris led VSU with three hits in four at bats.
The Trojans finished the week going 5-1 with 2 victories over # 4 Ranked Pace and then the three game sweep of Stratford. VSU will travel to play Winston-Salem State in a doubleheader contest on March 30, 2019.
