HOOPS CENTRAL: Virginia State at Virginia Union University

ETTRICK, Va. (February 8, 2019) –  The Virginia State University men's and women's basketball teams will travel to Richmond, Virginia to face I-95 rival Virginia Union University (VUU) at Barco-Stevens Hall on Saturday, Feb. 7. The women's game will tipoff at 2 p.m., followed by the men's game at 4 p.m.

The Women's Game: The Trojans (9-12, 3-9 CIAA, 1-5 North) fell to the Lady Bears of Shaw University (SU), 59-54, in overtime at the VSU Multipurpose Centers on Feb. 6.  The Trojans was led by junior forward Shayln Washington securing 16 points, four rebounds and three steals.
 
Washington scored 16 points in 40 minutes of play. The Richmond, Virginia native was six-for-17 from the floor and two-for-three from the free throw line. Autumn Hopson finished the contest with 13 points and three rebounds. Senior Chrisanna Green collected 10 points and nine rebounds. 

  
The Lady Panthers women's basketball team (20-1, 11-1 CIAA, 6-0 North) secured a 87-47 victory over the Rams of Winston-Salem State University on Feb. 6.
VUU's Ifunanya Okoye scored 11 points and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds while Nicole Floyd and Shameka McNeill each added 10 points. Virginia Union's Jasmine Carter led the Lady Panthers on the boards with 12 rebounds.
 


The last time the two school met was on Jan. 19th where the Lady Panthers collected a 73-49 victory over the Trojans.

 
The Men's Game: The Trojans (20-3, 12-0 CIAA, 6-0 North) defeated the Bears of Shaw University, 96-87, at the VSU Multipurpose Center on Feb. 6. Cedric Wiggins finished with a game-high 21 points on perfect five-of-nice shots from the field to go along with one rebound, 10 assists and two steals. Jahmere Howze posted a 20-point performance, to go with six rebounds, one assist and one steal. Andrew Corum finished the contest with contributing 18 points. Jalen Jackson secured 13 points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals. Brandon Holley contributed 11 points.

 

Virginia Union men (14-9, 9-3 CIAA, 3-2 North) secured a 74-73 victory over Piedmont International University on Feb. 6. Virginia Union's Terrell Leach scored a team-high 21 points while Wright added 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.
