ETTRICK, Va. (February 6, 2019)- The Virginia State University women's basketball team (9-12, 3-10) suffered a tough 59-54 overtime loss to the Lady Bears of Shaw University tonight at the VSU Multipurpose Center.
Shaw University opened the contest outscoring the Trojans 14-9 after one quarter. Both team continued to added points in the second quarter as Shaw took a 29-28 advantage at the half. The Trojans secured a 43-35 advantage after three periods. The Lady Bears continued to rally bringing the score 52 all to end the regular regulation. In overtime Shaw rolled to a 59-49 victory over Virginia State. The Trojans was led by junior forward
Shayln Washington securing 16 points, four rebounds and three steals.
Washington scored 16 points in 40 minutes of play. The Richmond, Virginia native was six-for-17 from the floor and two-for-three from the free throw line.
Autumn Hopson finished the contest with 13 points and three rebounds. Senior
Chrisanna Green collected 10 points and nine rebounds.
Macy Keen led the Lady Bears in double figures with contributing 20 total points.
How It Happened

Chrisanna Green secured the opening basket to start the third quarter to bring the score 30-31. The Trojans then took a 36-33 lead on a layup by
Chrisanna Green with 4:28 left in the quarter.
Yazmen Hannah added one from the free throw line to grow its lead making the score 42-33 with 1:24 left in the quarter. Virginia State ended the quarter with a 43-35 advantage.
The Trojans brought the same momentum in the 4
thQuarter advancing its lead by 10 points (47-37) with 6:43 left in the contest. Virginia State then made the score 52-46 with 1:34 left in the game. Shaw used a late rally with 00:35 seconds left to tie the game 52 all sending the contest into overtime.
In overtime the Lady Bears open with adding four points to the make the score 56-52. The Trojans answered with adding two free throws bringing the score, 56-54. The Lady Bears then used the remaining minutes adding points to cruise to a 59-54 victory.

> Virginia State was 19-of-66 (28.8 percent) shooting and 11-of-21 (52.4 percent) from the charity stripe
> Shaw University shot 52.5 percent (21-of-40) from the floor and 62.5 percent (10-of-16) from the free-throw line
> Virginia State finished with 27 points off Lady Bears turnovers and 11 second-chance points
> Shaw tallied seven points off VSU turnovers and nine second-chance points
UP NEXT: The Trojans will next hit the road for a CIAA Conference Northern Division matchup against I-95 rival the Lady Panthers of Virginia Union University on Saturday, February 9. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m. at Barco-Steven Hall on the campus of Virginia Union University.
