ETTRICK, VA (November 2, 2019)- The Virginia State University Trojans football team took down the Hawks of Chowan University in a close 28-21 victory at Garrison Stadium.

FIRST HALF
After a speedy first quarter, both teams remained scoreless. Trojans running back Toure Wallace put VSU on the board minutes into the second quarter.

A fumble by the Hawks with 6:53 left in in the half, allowed VSU to run their needed plays for a 3-yard touchdown by running back Darius Hagans.
Â
Although the Hawks made a pass connect for a touchdown, the Trojans rounded out the half with a 14-7 lead over Chowan.

SECOND HALF
A Hawks fumble with 13:01 left in the 3rd quarter, set the Trojans up for 3 plays resulting in a 39 yard touchdown by Demetrius Strickland moving the Trojans up 20-7. Â Chowan would soon answer back with a 65 yard touchdown to close the scoring gap, 20-14.

Vincent Parker found a gap in the Hawks game with an interception with 6:45 left in the 3rd quarter. After 10 plays, VSU entered the end zone by way of Darius Hagans for a 9-yard touchdown. Â Cordelral Cook found space to extend the Trojans lead with a 2-point conversion.

At end of the 3rd quarter, VSU held a 28-14 lead over Chowan.

Despite a 4-yard touchdown by the Hawks minutes into the 4th quarter to close the scoring gaps, 28-21, Javon Frazier secured a game changing sack in the final seconds of the contest. The sack prevented Chowan from tying the game and potentially taking the win.

After 4 quarters, the Trojans finished victorious with a 28-21 win over the Chowan Hawks.

LEADERS
Offensively, Cook was 12-for-16 in pass completions for 113 yards. Demetrius Strickland rushed for 112 net yards on 12 attempts for a single touchdown, while Dazmine Palmer covered 33 yards on 3 receptions.

Defensively, Zion Johnson led the charge for VSU with 11 total tackles, 5 solo and 6 assisted. Will Adams was not too far behind with 10 tackles, 4 solo and 6 assisted.

UP NEXT
VSU will wrap up the regular season on November 9 for a Trojans Senior Day against the Panthers of Virginia Union University. Kick-off is set for 2pm at Rogers Stadium.
