ELIZABETH CITY, NC (October 12, 2019) – The VSU Trojans football team overpowered the Vikings of Elizabeth City State University with a 54-21 victory. The home field advantage did not assist the Vikings, allowing the Trojans to take CIAA northern division win to kick off divisional play.
THE BASICS

FIRST HALF
After 7 plays and numerous close attempts to the end zone, Nickolas Woolfolk put the Trojans on the board with a 24 yard field goal. Not too long after, quarterback
Cordelral Cook got the VSU's momentum started with a 22 yard touchdown carry. Despite the Vikings getting on the board, bring the score to 10-7, the next quarter would not see any ECSU scoring action as the Trojans defense took control.
Running back
Darius Hagans did not waste any time extending the scoring gap for the VSU. After making a connection with Cook for a 30 yard touchdown pass, he reentered the end zone with a 20 yard carry to move the Trojans up, 23-7. Seconds before halftime, the Trojans took advantage of their possession with a 10 yard touchdown by wide receiver
Christian Nelson to extend the score, 30-7, going into halftime.
SECOND HALF
Possessions came and went, but the 3
rd quarter did not see any scoring action until the final minutes.
Finding a gap in the Vikings play, defensive lineman
Kwabe Boateng plowed down the field for a 30 yard interception touchdown in favor of VSU.
Despite ECSU answering back with a 65 yard touchdown pass,
Jesus Valenzuela kicked a 21 yard field goal for VSU, to extend the lead, 40-14, at the end of the 3
rd quarter.
The 4
th quarter was good for the Trojans as running back Donovan Goode took control. In the quarter's opening minutes, Goode ran in a 75 yard touchdown for VSU. Although the Vikings secured a 1 yard run to the end zone, Goode closed the quarter, and the game, with a 5 yard Trojans touchdown run.
VSU undoubtedly secured the 54-21 victory over the ECSU Vikings!
LEADERS
Offensively, Cook was 10-for-17 in pass completions for 176 yards and 2 touchdowns. Goode rushed for 96 yards on 9 attempts for 2 touchdowns, while Jevon LaPierre covered 97 yards on 3 receptions. Defensively, defensive end
Javon Frazier led the charge for VSU with 6 total tackles, 2 solo and 4 assisted, 1.5 sacks for 10 yards and a 2 tackles for a loss of 12 yards.
UP NEXT
The Trojans will return to home to Rogers Stadium to host the Bulldogs of Bowie State University for VSU Homecoming 2019. Kickoff is set for 2pm.
