ETTRICK, Va. (January 19, 2019)– The Virginia State University women's basketball team (8-8, 2-5 CIAA) suffered a tough 73-49 loss to the nationally ranked Lady Panthers of Virginia Union University tonight.
Virginia Union opened the contest outscoring the Trojans 21-13 after one quarter. Virginia Union continued to put points on the board outscoring the Trojans in the second, 17-11, as Virginia State trailed 38-24 at the half. The Lady Panthers secured a 60-30 advantage after three periods and rolled to a 73-49 victory over Virginia State. The Trojans was led by senior forward
Chrisanna Green recording a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds.
Green scored 12 points in 35 minutes of play. The Jamestown, New York native was three-for-nine from the free throw line and three-for-eight from the floor.
Yazmen Hannah and
Autumn Hopson recorded 10 points each.
Shareka McNeill led the Lady Panthers in double figures with contributing 23 total points.
How It Happened
Virginia Union opened the contest outscoring the Trojans 21-13 after one quarter. Virginia Union continued to put points on the board outscoring the Trojans in the second, 17-11, as Virginia State trailed 38-24 at the half.
Asia Timmons secured the opening basket to start the third quarter to bring the score 38-26.
Yazmen Hannah added a free throw to cut the Lady Panthers lead making the score 45-30 with 3:58 left in the quarter. Virginia Union then added baskets to grow it lead 60-30 to end the period.
Virginia Union continued to put up points over the remaining minutes to close out the game giving them a 73-49 victory.
Chrisanna Green collected a free throw with 00:56 seconds left in the contest to close out the scoring for the Trojans.

> Virginia State was 15-of-51 (29.4 percent) shooting and 11-of-19 (57.9 percent) from the charity stripe
> Virginia Union University shot 49.1 percent (26-of-53) from the floor and 70 percent (14-of-20) from the free-throw line
> Virginia State finished with 16 points off VUU turnovers and four second-chance points
> CU tallied 30 points off VSU turnovers and seven second-chance points
