Virginia State Set to Host Chowan University Saturday

ETTRICK, Va. (October 24, 2018) – The Virginia State University Football Team will host the Hawks of Chowan University (3-4, 2-2 CIAA) on Saturday, Oct. 27. Kickoff is slated for 2 p.m.

Series History vs. Chowan University
Saturday will be the 9th meeting between the Trojans and Hawks but just the 5th time the two programs have faced off in Rogers Stadium. The Trojans lead the all-time series with a 7-1 record, including a 3-1 mark at Rogers Stadium.

Saturday will mark Virginia State's final home game of the 2018 season. The Trojans enters the contest with securing a 54-7 victory over Lincoln University on Saturday, October 20.  VSU's last win over Chowan was on October 28, 2017 when the Trojans posted a 26-23 victory.

VSU finished the competition with 435 total offensive yards and were 2 of 7 on third down conversions. VSU went 4 of 4 of its red-zone scoring chances and had a total of 116 total rushing yards and secured one rushing touchdowns.

Junior Cordelral Cook (Atlanta, Ga.) threw for 214 yards, completing 16-of-19 passes, four touchdowns and rushing yards (28). Redshirt freshman Darrell Olivier (Washington, DC) rushed for 28 yards and sophomore Jemourri LaPierre (Chesterfield, Va.) recorded a team-high 119 reception yards and three touchdowns. Defensively, senior Patrick Prosser paced the Trojans with five tackles and two tackles for loss. 

Chowan University enters Saturday's contest coming off a 44-20 victory over Elizabeth City State University on Saturday, Oct. 20 at the Roebuck Stadium.
 
Chowan picked up their first win in Elizabeth City during the series and first back-to-back wins against the Vikings.

The Chowan defense harassed the Elizabeth City State offense all game long, allowing seven first downs and a negative rushing total (-2 yards).  The Vikings netted 112 total yards, while the Hawks posted 550 yards.

Chowan recorded eight sacks on the afternoon as Rafiq Abdul-Wahid registered 3.5 sacks in the contest to lead the Hawks.  Tyler Bembry, Dre Terry, and Arrington Bazemore recorded a sack.  George Parker picked off the Vikings quarterback.

Tyrell Freeman rushed for 157 yards on 26 carries and found the endzone twice. Brandon Hughes rushed for 51 yards and a touchdown. Bryce Witt tossed for 285 yards through the air and added 52 yards on the ground for three total touchdowns.  Paul Gooden registered seven catches for 101 yards and a score.

Following Saturday's tilt, the Trojans will play its final regular season game of the 2018 season as they travel to Richmond, Virginia to face the Panthers of Virginia Union University on Nov. 3. Kickoff from Hovey Field is slated for 1 p.m.
