Box Score OXFORD, Pa. (April 29, 2017) – The Virginia State University baseball team managed a split with Lincoln University in the final doubleheader of the regular season, falling in game one 10-9 while taking game two by an 7-5 score this afternoon at the Oxford High School Field.
Virginia State wasted no time in game one, plating eight runs in the first three innings of the game securing a 8-5 lead.
VSU started strong with senior
David Markins (Colonial Heights, VA) homerun to left field, bringing senior
Jahleel Sewer (Hampton, VA) and sophomore
Sisqo Scott (Hampton, VA) across home plate, recording 3 RBIs. Freshman
Delmacus Talley (Virginia Beach, VA) singled, scoring senior
Colton Gunn (Dinwiddie, VA), recording an RBI. In the second inning leading off for the Trojans senior
Jahleel Sewer (Hampton, VA) homered to right field, scoring Scott, recording an RBI. Senior
David Markins singled to the left side, plating
Devin Walker (Portsmouth, VA), recording an RBI. Rounding out the top of the third senior
Colton Gunn singled to the left side, plating Scott, recording an RBI. The Lions answered with adding five runs in the bottom of the third inning. The Trojans continued to rally adding one more run in the seventh to finish the game with nine total runs. The Lions added five additional runs in the fifth inning to secure the 10-9 victory. The Trojans outhit the Lions recording a total of 18 hits. On the mound VSU finished with allowing 12 hits, 10 runs, four walks, and six strikeouts.
In game two, the VSU continued with the momentum. VSU secured an early a 2-0 lead, senior
David Markins doubled to center field, plating Scott, recording an RBI. Rounding out the first inning senior
Julian White (Yorktown, VA) doubled to center field, scoring Markins, recording an RBI. The second inning was scoreless for both teams. The Lions added one run in the third inning. Leading off for VSU in the fifth inning senior
Jahleel Sewer homered to right field, recording an RBI. Followed by senior
David Markins homerun to left field, recording an RBI. The Trojans scored on a wild pitch to secure the 7-5 victory. The Lions added four additional runs in the remaining innings of the game. On the mound VSU allowed nine hits, five runs, one walk, and five strikeouts.
The split moves VSU to 19-24 overall, 6-10 in CIAA play while Lincoln University now stands at 6-33, 2-14 in CIAA play. The Trojans now look to prepare for the 2017 CIAA Baseball Championships on May 4-6
