BOWIE, Md. – The Virginia State University women's tennis team has made it to the second round of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Women's Tennis Championship on Thursday, April 20 after passing rival Virginia Union University by the score of 5-1 at the Bowie State University Tennis Courts.
The Trojans got the match started with an equally dominant doubles performance with 8-0 wins in all three sets. Freshman
Christina Washington and junior
Tamisha Richardson combined for a win at #2 doubles before junior
Charde Washington and freshman
Felicia Tucker followed suit with an 8-0 #3 doubles win before sophomore
Sydney Yao and senior
Sheila James closed things out with a #1 doubles. With the win, the Trojans needed just two singles wins, but the team would have to do it without #1 singles player James, who retired with an injury and gave VUU a #1 singles win. The effort was not quite enough as Tucker claimed a 6-1, 6-0 win at #5 singles before Tucker closed out the match with a 6-1, 6-0 win at #4 singles.
With the win, Virginia State (15-4, 10-3 CIAA) will now meet the Lady Bears of Shaw University (19-2, 12-1 CIAA) on Friday, April 21 at 10:30 a.m. The two teams met once earlier this year, where the Lady Bears passed the Trojans 9-0 back in March during the CIAA Round-Up.
