Box Score ETTRICK, VA (April 12, 2017) – The Virginia State University baseball team managed a split with Shepherd University, securing a 6-3 victory in game one while falling in game two by a 11-4 score this afternoon at Whaley Colbert Field.
Virginia State wasted no time in game one, plating five runs in the first three innings of the game securing a 5-0 lead. Starting things off for the Trojans was senior
Jahleel Sewer (Hampton, VA) launching a homer recording an RBI in the first inning. In the second inning senior
Jahleel Sewer (Hampton, VA) doubled to left field scoring senior
Tashuan Taylor (Richmond, VA), junior
Michael Liburd (Suffolk, VA), and senior
Julian White (Yorktown, VA) recording three RBIs. Leading things off in the third inning for VSU was senior
Colton Gunn (Dinwiddie, VA) who doubled to left field scoring junior
Jamar Hinton (Dinwiddie, VA) recording an RBI. In the fourth inning the Rams of Shepherd University added one run to cut the lead to 5-1.
The Rams when added two more runs in the last two innings of the game. The Trojans added one run in the bottom of the fourth to secure the 6-4 win.
On the mound for VSU was sophomore
Jordan Claytor (Dinwiddie, VA) who allowed five hits, three runs, three walks, and four strikeouts.
In game two, the Rams bats came alive. Shepherd secured an early a 3-0 lead in the first three innings. The Trojans answered in the bottom of the third inning with sophomore
Sisqo Scott (Hampton, VA) launched a single to left field scoring senior
Jahleel Sewer (Hampton, VA), and
Tashuan Taylor (Richmond, VA) recording two RBIs. Followed by senior
David Markins (Colonial Heights, VA) launching a homer and scoring
Sisqo Scott (Hampton, VA) recording two RBIs and cutting the lead 4-3.
The Rams continued to add eight more runs in the remaining innings to secure the 11-4 victory.
Starting off on the mound for VSU was senior
Colton Gunn (Dinwiddie, VA) who allowed 10 hits, eight runs, and three walks in the five innings pitched. Followed by sophomore
Jeremiah Hardy (Hampton, VA) who wrapped things up for the Trojans allowing four hits, three runs, one walks, and three strikeouts in the one inning pitched.
The split moves VSU to 15-20 overall, 3-9 in CIAA play while Shepherd improves to 18-15, 14-2 in MEC play. The Trojans will look to improve as they prepare for the 2017 CIAA Baseball Championships on May 4-6
th on the campus of Virginia State.
VSU will travel on Friday, April 14
th, as they take on Newport News Apprentice in a non-conference doubleheader with first pitch slated for 1:00 p.m.
