ETTRICK, VA – The Virginia State University women's tennis team took advantage of a home match-up with a 9-0 win against nonconference opponent Salem International. With the victory, the Trojans improve to 1-1 on the season, while Salem International dropped to 0-5 following this road competition.
Doubles competition was led by Shiela James and
Sydney Yao at the No. 1 position, as the dynamic duo eliminated Salem International players Felice Reed and Waverly Federico, 8-0. In the No. 2 doubles position,
Tamisha Richardson and
Christina Washington came out on top against Jen Foreman and Melanie Williams by a score of 8-0.
Felicia Tucker and
Charde Washington beat Kaija Scott and Megan Perez from the No. 3, 8-0, to give Virginia State a sweep in doubles.
On the singles side, all six Trojans rolled to two-set wins, including 6-0, 6-0 and 6-2, 6-0 results from the No. 1 and 2 positions. The 9-0 match victory becomes the team's first of the 2017 spring campaign.
Virginia State will next travel to compete in the 2017 CIAA Tennis Round-up hosted by Livingstone College. All matches will be played at two venues Salisbury High School and City Park. The Trojans are set to face Johnson C. Smith University on March 10 in City Park at 5 pm. On Saturday, Mar. 11 the Trojans will take on the Rams of Winston Salem State University at Salisbury High School with a start time of 9 am. The Trojans will then close out the round-up facing Livingstone College in City Park at 2 pm.
