SALISBURY, NC - The Virginia State Trojans (2-1, 1-0 CIAA) secured a 8-1 victory in their first Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) match of the season against the Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith University, Friday evening in the 2017 CIAA Round-Up.
Doubles competition was led by Shiela James and
Sydney Yao at the No. 1 position, as the dynamic duo eliminated Johnson C. Smith players Aria Springfield and Michaela Colvin, 8-0. In the No. 2 doubles position,
Tamisha Richardson and
Christina Washington came out on top against Victoria Ogundipe and Kaylin Roman by a score of 8-1.
Felicia Tucker and
Charde Washington beat Alisa Stevenson and Amirah Burnett from the No. 3, 8-0, to give Virginia State a sweep in doubles.
On the singles side, five Trojans rolled to two-set wins, including 6-2, 6-2 and 6-3, 6-0 results from the No. 1 and 2 positions. The 8-1 match victory becomes the team's first CIAA conference win of the 2017 spring campaign.
VSU will be back in action for two matches against the Rams of Winston-Salem State University and Livingstone College on March 11.
