RALEIGH, NC- The Virginia State University women's tennis team defeated the Bulldogs of Bowie State University, 5-2, in the first round of the CIAA Championship to advance to Day 2.

The Trojans gave a pair of forfeit wins at #3 doubles and #6 singles, but the women cruised from there as they took a pair of wins at #2 doubles (8-0) and at #1 doubles (8-5) to tie the match at 2-2. From there, VSU took three singles wins to claim the victory. A 6-2, 6-2 win at #5 singles to get things started, followed by a 6-1, 6-3 win at #3 singles, and a 6-0, 6-4 win at #4 singles to round out the match.

The Trojans will face the Bears of Shaw University on Friday, April 29 at 10am at the Millbrook Tennis Center in Raleigh, NC.
