WINSTON-SALEM, NC- The Virginia State University men's tennis team took down the Johnson C. Smith University Golden Bulls at the CIAA Roundup to open their season on March 6.
The Trojans returned to the Land of Troy with 2 wins over the Golden Bulls.
Under the leadership of Head Coach
Gene Thompson, 5 of the 6 student-athletes made their first collegiate tennis match debut.
In match one, VSU finished with an 8-1 win.
Rookie
Sultan Kenes started the Trojans off strong in the singles, securing both games with a 6-0 score, taking the set.
The Trojans #2 single was rookie
Marcus Smith, who survived the set after falling short in the second game.
Senior
Delwin McCurdy and rookies
Jonathan Fuchs and Alexander Walker where able overpower JCSU, taking their respective single sets. Rookie
Keon Halley fell short in the third game of the set by 2 points.
Halley would then team up with Walker to collect a doubles, 8-4 win. Linking up for the doubles sets were Kenes and Fuchs who took an 8-2 victory while McCurdy and Smith also tallied an 8-2 win.
Match 2 mimicked the first as the Trojans secured the 8-1 win.
The Trojans will be back in action on March 8 to take on the VUU Panthers at 3pm at the VSU Tennis Complex. This will be the first home match for the team.
