Box Score 2 ETTRICK, Va.- The Virginia State University (VSU) Trojan baseball team powered past the St. Augustine's University (SAU) Falcons in a doubleheader CIAA conference matchup on April 11 at the Whaley Colbert Field.
Junior
Colton Gunn is credited for the 5-4 victory in game one after pitching the first 5 innings. Gunn gave 5 strikeouts and only allowed 6 hits and 4 runs. Senior
Zachery Jordan took the mound for the final two innings giving 1 strikeout and only allowing 2 hits.
The first inning was over quickly as neither team secured a run.
The second inning was a game changer for the Trojans. Gunn and sophomore
David Markins made two consecutive hits earning them both doubles. After a single from senior
Tyler Coleman, a scarified fly from junior
Stephen Brown and a stolen base by junior
Jamison Griffin, the score at the bottom of the second inning was 3-1.
A run from Jordan and another stolen base and run by Griffin kept VSU in the lead at the bottom of the third inning with a score of 5-2. The Falcons attempted to rally back at the top of the fourth, securing two run, but did not follow through in the remaining two innings.
The VSU Baseball Alumni reunited at Whaley Colbert Field to support the current Trojan baseball team. After game one, the proud alumni were recognized at home plate for paving the way for VSU Baseball.
Game 2 flew by with no runs in the first 4 innings. SAU secured their only run of the game at the top of the fifth. A double by senior
Nicholas Christopher in the fifth inning earned him 2 RBIs, ran in by Taylor and junior
Johnny Rowe. Christopher would soon follow suit with a run giving VSU a 3-1 lead. Junior
Corey Grant earned 2 RBI's in the sixth inning which were run in by Markins and Coleman. Junior
Jay Dee Johnson, III is credited for the Trojans 5-1 win after pitching all seven innings giving 2 strikeouts and only allowing 4 hits.
The Trojans are currently 17-9 on the season under head coach
Merrill Morgan.
VSU will take on the SAU Falcons on Sunday, April 12 at 1pm for day 2 of their CIAA conference doubleheader matchup.
