Trojan Take a Homecoming Upset to Bowie State

Box Score ETTRICK, Va.- A crowd of over 7,300 filled Roger Stadium for VSU's highly anticipated homecoming game. The Virginia State University Trojans fell short of a win to the Bowie State University Bulldogs, 22- 19. The Trojan move to a 4-3 overall record, 2-2 in the conference.

Thank you to the 95' Championship football teams captain accompanied the Trojan captains Jaivon Smallwood, Darion Thomas, Tarian Ayres, and Ray Prosise to mid-field for the coin toss in which the Trojans would receive.

Offensively, everyone at Roger Stadium will remember the name Trenton Cannon. The sophomore running back from Hampton, VA recorded a career high of 185 yards on 12 carries and all three of the Trojan touchdowns. Pollock led the Bulldogs offense with 103 yards on 5 receptions.

The Trojan defense was pioneered by junior linebacker Geo Feggins (South Hill, VA) who recorded 12 total tackles (6 solo). The Bulldogs defense was led by Anderson who recorded 5.5 tackles (5 solo).

Cannon opened up the ball game with a 67 yd touchdown run to give the Trojans a 7-0 lead on the first play of the ball game. On 4th & 4 at the VSU 9 yd line, the Bulldogs answered back with a 8 yd touchdown run by Chappell. The Trojans maintained their early lead after Darion Thomas (VA Beach, VA) blocked BSU's  kick attempt.

Five minutes into the second quarter, down by a touchdown on 3rd & 9, Ayres finds Jaivon Smallwood (VA Beach, VA) for a 34 yard completion. With 10:13 remaining in the second quarter Cannon revisits the end zone on a 26 yard pass from Tarian Ayres (Dillwyn, VA). The Trojans held the Bulldogs to a 22 yd field goal with 8:33 remaining in the second quarter that would give BSU a 16 - 13 lead. At the end of the first half the Trojans trailed the Bulldogs 16-13.

The score remained 16 -13 in the Bulldogs favor throughout the third quarter until Cannon broke through the heart of the Bulldogs defense with 43 seconds remaining in the quarter for a 67 yd touchdown. The touchdown would be Cannon's third touchdown of the contest, scoring all of the VSU point's.

Both teams defense controlled the beginning of the fourth quarter as the score remained 19-16 in favor of the Trojans. Darion Thomas came up with a big time interception for the Trojan defense on the Bulldogs 2nd and 2 with just under 12 minutes remaining in the 4th quarter. The game took a turn for the worst when the Bulldogs scored off of a 12 yd pass with only 43 seconds remaining on the game clock. The Trojans attempted to rally back in the final seconds after a 39 yard return from Earl Hughes (Richmond, VA), but the Trojans came up short.

The Trojans will travel to Lincoln, PA to take on the Lincoln University Lions on Oct. 24 at 1pm.

The Virginia State Department of Athletics annual 1,000 cans, 1 goal campaign initiative is underway. Canned food items collected will be donated to the local food banks. The Department encourages all fans, alumni, faculty and friends to bring a canned food item to all of the home volleyball and football games this season.
