TROJANS CRUISE PAST FAYETTEVILLE STATE, 35-14

Box Score ETTRICK, Va. – Senior running back Trey Johnson rushed for a career-high 125 yards and a touchdown to help lead the Virginia State University football team past Fayetteville State University, 35-14 in Rogers Stadium Saturday afternoon.
 
With the victory, the Trojans improve to 2-2 overall and 1-0 in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association; while FSU falls to 0-4 overall and 0-1 in league play.
 
VSU opened the contest on defense, limiting the Broncos to only seven yards in five plays before having to punt. Virginia State marched the ball down the field on its first possession to grasp a 7-0 lead off a two-yard pass from sophomore quarterback Tarian Ayres to junior running back Kevon Bellamy at the 8:09 mark in the first quarter.
 
Junior defensive back Tyrell Smith scored VSU's second score of the ballgame, picking up a blocked punt in the end zone by fellow junior defensive back Dontrell Jones, taking a 14-0 lead.  
 
Fayetteville recorded its first score with 2:21 left in the first quarter on a run by Andre Montgomery, making it a 14-7 contest.
 
A three-yard scamper by Johnson at the 5:15 mark gave the Trojans a 21-7 lead going into the half.
 
Virginia State opened the second half, scoring on its first possession, capping a 10 play, 75-yard drive on a one-yard touchdown run by Bellamy and taking a 28-7 lead.
 
Ayres two-yard run topped an eleven-play 52 yard scoring drive for the Trojans at the 00:05 mark in the third quarter, making it a 35-7 contest.
 
The Broncos capped all scoring, 35-14 in the fourth quarter with 4:21 remaining in the contest off a one-yard rush by Montgomery.   
 
For VSU, freshman running back Earl Hughes recorded a career-high 80 yards on eleven carries; while senior receiver Dion Futch led all receivers with 65 yards on five receptions.
 
Defensively, senior linebacker Brandon Robinson registered seven total tackles; while junior defensive back Bryce Bradley and senior linebacker Andre Rawls recorded six total in the victory.  
 
The Trojans return to action hosting St. Augustine University next Saturday, October 4 in Rogers Stadium at 2 p.m.
 
The VSU Athletic Department continues its' "1000 Cans, One Goal" campaign initiative at every home game through Friday, Nov. 21. The purpose of the initiative is to support the local food banks in helping feed the less fortunate during the holiday season. Donors are asked to either bring can goods to any VSU Athletic home game (football, basketball, volleyball, and/or cross-country) and/or drop your items off to the Athletic Department.
