RICHMOND, VA- Hail State! Hail State! Hail, Hail, Hail to the 2014 graduating class of student-athletes at Virginia State University. They were honored on Sunday, May 11, 2014 at the Richmond Coliseum. Virginia State University held their 128
th Commencement Ceremony and among the class of 667 students were outstanding Trojan students-athletes and interns.
There were 59 student-athletes to graduate, of those students, 33 had over a 3.0 grade point average.
Senator Tim Kaine, our former Governor for the Commonwealth of Virginia, was the ceremony's keynote speaker. Kaine shared with the graduates that he only remembered two things from his graduation. One was the story regarding his high school girlfriend who broke up with him. She came to his graduation and gave him a hug and kiss. After that moment, he never saw her again. The other memory was when he saw his parents after the ceremony. He wanted to be a "cool guy" so he shook their hand. Kaine then looked over and saw a jock embrace his parents and he thought, "I want to be like that guy." The moral of his stories were you need to seize the moment on this day and embrace your family and friends. As Senator Kaine closed his brief but uplifting speech, he shared with the students what his mother shared with him as a young man, "You have a decision to make in life whether to be right or do right.
