Trojans Pitching Continues to Dominate in Double Header Sweep of Winston Salem State

The Trojans extended their winning streak to six games on Saturday, with two wins against the defending champions, Winston Salem State. Colton Gunn (Dinwiddie, VA) got the start for the Trojans. After retiring the side in the top of the first, the Trojans jumped out to an early three run lead. Zachery Jordan (Chesterfield, VA) started the rally with a walk, followed by Joshua Markins (Colonial Heights, VA) with a single. Percy Evans (Cary, NC) reached on an error which allowed Jordan to score. William Tapp (Dinwiddie, VA) drove the next pitch down the left field line. The long single allowed Markins and Evans to score before Tapp was tagged out at second trying to strecth out the double. Gunn was soon able to keep the Rams batters off balance until the top half of the 6th inning. Clinging to a 3-2 lead and the Rams putting together a comeback attempt, Coach Morgan put Tapp in to relieve Gunn. Entering the game with runners on first and third, the Rams managed to tie the game at 3. Bottom of the 6th game tied at 3 the Trojans pieced together another rally of their own. Nathan Anger (Colonial Heights, VA) was hit by a pitch, followed by two bunt singles by David Markins (Colonial Heights, VA) and Jamison Griffin (Newport News, VA). Nicholas Christopher (Dinwiddie, VA) continued his clutch late game hitting with an RBI single to take the 4-3 lead. The Trojans didn't stop there, one batter later Joshua Markins drilled a fastball past the second baseman to score two more runs for the Trojans. Percy Evans would tack on another RBI single and the Trojans took a 7-3 lead into the final inning. The four run cushion would be more than enough as Tapp closed the door on the Rams to pick up the win in relief.

Game two was more of a pitchers duel as the Trojans started Zachery Jordan and the Rams started Scott Wells. The Trojans picked up where they left off as Percy Evans started the scoring with an RBI single in the first. After a lead off of a walk and a few base hits, the Rams managed to tie the game on a wild pitch in the top of the second. The Trojans responded to the tie game by adding three more runs in the bottom of the second on RBIs by Jamison Griffin, Nicholas Christopher, and Zachery Jordan. The three run lead combined with solid pitching and sound defense, proved to be to much for the Rams to handle. Jordan cruised the rest of the way earning the complete game 4-2 win. Jordan scattered 10 hits while striking out three and allowing only two earned runs in his third win of the season. With the double header sweep, the Trojans improved to 12-3 overall and 6-0 in the CIAA.

The Trojans and the Rams will return to action on Monday for the last two games in the four game set.
