Trojans Wins Four Straight Series in Atlanta, GA

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2  Atlanta, GA - The Virginia State University Baseball team opened the 2014 season Saturday sweeping the Tigers of Morehouse 8-4, and 8-7.

Game one of the double header the Trojans scattered 12 hits. Leading the way were William Tapp (Dinwiddie, VA), and Jamison Griffin (Newport News, VA) who both went three for four. Griffin also picked up two stolen bases. Also at bat swinging hot were Tyler Coleman (Chesterfield, VA) two for four with two RBIs and Zachery Jordan who went two for three with a double, home run, and three stolen bases. Colton Gunn (Dinwiddie, VA) picked up the win throwing four strong innings. Nate Anger (Colonial Heights, VA) came in the game to relieve Gunn to close out the game.

Game two of the double header the Trojans relied on late game heroics to win the game.   Morehouse took an early 6-0 lead after two innings before the Trojans came alive. Midway through the third inning Coach Merrill Morgan made a change in pitcher putting Rodell Stewart (Dinwiddie, VA) on the mound to stop the bleeding. "Rodell was able to locate his pitches very well and keep their batters from reaching base" Morgan said.

After spotting the Tigers a six run lead, the Trojans responded by outscoring them 8-1 over the last five innings of the game. With timely hits, the Trojans were able to get back in the game. The Trojans trailing 7-5 in the last inning with one out and runners on second and third,  leadoff batter Nick Christopher (Dinwiddie, VA) drilled a line drive off the pitchers leg that allowed Anger, and Tashaun Taylor (Richmond, VA) to score and tie the game at seven.  Jordan followed up Christopher's big hit with a sacrifice fly to score Griffin. That one run was enough cushion for Stewart to shut down the Tigers in the bottom of the seven to win 8-7.

The Trojans returned to action Sunday picking up a double header sweep over Clark Atlanta Panthers 2-1, and 6-5.

Jordan pitched the first game as first baseman Percy Evans (Cary, NC) led the Trojans offensively with two for three hits and a RBI.  Josh Markins also recorded a RBI.

The Trojans capped off the weekend sweep with a 6-5 victory in game two. Tapp started on the hill for the Trojans and cruised through the first five innings before the Panthers batters began to reach base. After Clark Atlanta tied the game at five, Christopher relieved Tapp on the mound.  With the game tied heading to the top of the 7th, the Trojans added an insurance run with freshman David Markins (Colonial Heights, VA) singled up the middle to score James Goodwin (Chicago, IL). Christopher finished the game earning the win. Markins lead the Trojan offense going three for four with a RBI.   Coleman, Christopher, and Jordan all finished with two hits on the day.

The Trojans return to action Saturday Feb 15th at 1:00 PM to host Gannon University.
