TROJANS TAKE THREE-GAME WINNING STREAK INTO SHOWDOWN WITH ECSU, SATURDAY

ETTRICK, Va. – The Virginia State University football team takes a three-game winning streak into Saturday's showdown with Elizabeth City State University in Rogers Stadium at 2 p.m.

The Trojans (3-2 overall, 2-0 CIAA) have been relentless on defense, limiting opponents to 31 percent (18/59) on third down conversations and only passing touchdowns on the season.  Senior linebacker Brandon Robinson leads VSU's stingy defensive unit with 35 total tackles, including four tackles for a loss and two sacks.
 
Offensively, junior receiver Jaivon Smallwood leads Virginia State with 405 yards on 25 receptions. The Virginia Beach, Va., native ranks sixth in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association in yards per game (81.0) and seventh in touchdowns (2). Sophomore quarterback Tarian Ayres has 1126 passing yards and is second in the conference in yards per game (225.2). He leads the conference in rushing touchdowns (5); while sitting eleventh in passing touchdowns (4).
 
ECSU (2-3, 1-1) comes in Saturday's contest after defeating Livingston College, 59-21 last weekend at home. Quarterback Will Boyette leads the Vikings' offense with 454 yards and four passing touchdowns on the season. Stephen Williams spearheads Elizabeth City's defense with 53 total tackles including four and a half tackles for a loss and three forced fumbles.    
 
The VSU Athletic Department continues its' "1000 Cans, One Goal" campaign initiative at every home game through Friday, Nov. 21. The purpose of the initiative is to support the local food banks in helping feed the less fortunate during the holiday season. Donors are asked to either bring can goods to any VSU Athletic home game (football, basketball, volleyball, and/or cross-country) and/or drop your items off to the Athletic Department.
