ETTRICK, VA --- Behind the play of quarterback
Justin Thorpe, Virginia State (2-1) built a 20-0 first quarter lead and cruised to a 41-0 victory over Kentucky State (2-1) before 3,678 fans on Military Appreciated Day at Rogers Stadium. Scoring the most points in a quarter in more than two seasons, Thorpe rushed for touchdowns of five and 28 yards and tossed a 33-yard scoring pass to Gene Holloman in the opening quarter of play.
In the second half, Trojan running back
Jordan Anderson took over. Anderson had just four yards rushing in the opening half but broke loose for 117 in the second half to finish with 121 yards on the ground. He scored second-half touchdowns on runs of nine and 63 yards. Zacchaeus Jackson closed out the scoring by picking up a fumble and returning it 65 yards for a score with 5:21 left in the contest.
The Trojan defense held the Thorobreds in check, limiting Kentucky State to just 151 yards offense and forcing three turnovers. Kentucky State managed only 32 yards on 27 carries. The Thorobreds came into the contest averaging 40.0 points per game.
Justin Thorpe was named Most Valuable Player of the Diamond Invitational Classic presented by the Fort Lee Quartermasters Club.
The game marked the home debut of Virginia State head coach
Latrell Scott. A native of Richmond and former head coach at the University of Richmond, Scott is in his first season as head coach of the Trojans.
