Ettrick, VA – Virginia State University split a doubleheader against CIAA northern division rival Chowan University, Saturday, March 30
th and dominated the win on Monday, April 1
st to end the series. Offense was an issue for the Trojans in their 7-0 loss in game one. Nonetheless, the Trojans rallied back late in the second game to obtain an 11-10 victory after four extra inning of baseball. Monday was a great day as the Trojans ended the series with a win 4-2.
Game one was an offensive and defensive struggle at times for the VSU Trojans. VSU was held scoreless but not hitless in game one. The Trojans recorded three hits after seven innings.
The 1
st inning did not go as planned for the Trojans.
Colton Gunn was wedged in a tight spot to open Saturday's doubleheader. The Trojans starting pitcher had to deal with three men on, no outs, a pitchers nightmare. Colton would give up the go ahead run in the first inning after tapping the batter with the ball earning the Hawks their first run of the game. Nonetheless
Colton Gunn began to warm up sitting down one to earn the Trojans their first out of the evening. The Trojans defense then recorded two consecutive groundouts, allowing the Trojans to escape the 1
st inning with two runs, a hit, an error, with two Hawks left on base. The Trojans defense would hold the Hawks scoreless in innings two through four. Heads up plays from the Trojans outfield kept VSU within striking distance prior to a big 5
th inning by the Hawks. Chowan tacked on four more runs extending their lead 6-0. Head Coach Morgan decided to make a change after five innings of the game.
Rico Solomon would pitch the rest of the way for the Trojans.
Colton Gunn gave up six runs on four hits and four errors. The Trojans were in dire need of offense in game one. The Chowan Hawks would tack on one more run in the seventh to complete a 7-0 shutout over the Trojans.
Game two was not for the faint of heart. A late seventh inning rally that featured six runs set the Trojans up for four extra innings of baseball. As in the first game Coach Morgan made a change at the pitcher's mount during the 5
th inning.
Maso Cotton went to the mount allowing him and the Trojans defense to hold the Hawks down while the Trojans offense applied the finishing blow. The Trojans earned a gritty 11-10 victory over Chowan University.
The Trojans put the pressure on the Hawks in the bottom of the 7
th inning with the bases loaded; two Trojans were able to score when
Nicholas Christopher hit a single up the middle closing the gap to 10-6. Bases loaded again and
Tyler Coleman singled to right field earning him 2 RBI's for a score of 10-8 Hawks still leading.
John McCarty flied out to center field giving
Joshua Markins the opportunity to steal home and score. To close out the 7
th inning,
Colton Gunn singled to left field for
James Goodwin to score the tying run. The Trojans were back in the game. It was not until the 11
th inning the Trojans closed the game out with the bases loaded again and
John McCarty is hit by the pitch and caused
Joshua Markins to score the winning run.
On Sunday, March 31
st due to rain the game was postponed until Monday, April 1
st and it was April Fools for the Hawks if they thought they were going to win. The Trojans of Virginia State University was determined to win the game and that they did.
The Trojans got on the scoreboard early in the game when
Percy Evans hit a fly out to left field allowing
Nicholas Christopher to advance home to score. It was not until the top of the 3
rd inning when the Hawks got on the board when Brandon Mack stole home and Josh Catalano scored from a single by Ryan Moore. By the end of the 3
rd inning the Trojans had tied the score 2-2. It was lights out for the Hawks when
Percy Evans stole home during the 7
th inning and
Vernon Vaughan scoring in the 8
th inning bringing the score to 4-2. This was a great win for the Trojans as it has put them one win away from Championship play-offs.
