After their first loss of the season, the Trojans went on to shutout both St. Augustine's and Fayetteville State 5-0 on Saturday, March 16
th at the CIAA Round-Up.
Virginia State suffered their first defeat of the season by the Lady Bears of Shaw University 5-4 at the Hawks Tennis Complex on the campus of Chowan University on March 15
th.
The No. 3 doubles duo of
Sharmane Tonkins and
Kayla Kale defeated Shaw's Menel Ben-Cheikh and Desiree Bell, 8-0. Virginia State dropped the first two doubles matches 8-2 and 8-4.
The Trojans came up short in the first two singles matches. No.1 singles,
Amanda Spencer lost 6-2, 6-1 and
Zaire Simmons fell 6-1, 6-0. VSU's
Brittany Uzzell defeated Michelle Hart in No.3 singles 6-4, 7-5. Shaw won the No. 4 singles with a 7-5, 6-3 score against VSU's
Nakesha Harry.
Virginia State battled back as
Sharmane Tonkins won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 5 and Kayla Kay's 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 6. Shaw issued the Trojans their first loss of the season with a 5-4 victory.
The Trojans took on St. Augustine's on Saturday, March 16
th and won 5-0.
Amanda Spencer and
Zaire Simmons teamed up to defeat St. Aug's No.1 doubles duo 8-3.
Nakesha Harry and
Sharmane Tonkins won 8-0 in No. 2 doubles against Morris and Fisher of St. Aug's.
Zaire Simmons picked up a win in No. 2 singles with a 6-0, 6-0 victory.
Nakesha Harry won by default at No. 3 singles, while
Kayla Kale blanked her opponent in No.5 singles 6-0, 6-0.
In their final match of the weekend Virginia State took on Fayetteville State. The Trojans won 5-0 as the teams only played in singles competition.
Amanda Spencer won 8-1 in No. 1 singles while
Zaire Simmons,
Nakesha Harry,
Sharmane Tonkins, and
Kayla Kale all won 8-0 to sweep the Lady Broncos.
