Green Leads Trojans in Win Over Benedict, 30-20

Virginia State University collected a season-high 379 total offensive yards, led by quarterback LaMonta Green's (red-shirt junior/ Los Angeles, CA) 206 passing yards and two touchdowns in a 30-20 win against Benedict College on Saturday, Sept. 15th in Columbia, SC.
Wide receiver Corey Young (senior/ Norfolk, VA) caught a 26 yard touchdown pass from LaMonta Green on the Trojans' opening possession, to give VSU an early 7-0 lead at the 11:23 mark in the first quarter. Green threw for 68 yards in the first quarter completing six of eight pass attempts. VSU collected six first downs, moving the chains in the air and also on the ground with a solid rushing attack. Tyler Wilson (sophomore/ Alexandria, VA) rushed for 17 yards in the first quarter.

In the second quarter Wilson scored two rushing touchdowns. The Trojans' Sean Smith (red-shirt junior/ Atlanta, GA) returned a punt for 25 yards to set up a six yard score for Wilson. VSU reclaimed the lead, 14-7 with 6:24 left in the first half. After a Benedict 43 yard made field goal, VSU responded with a 25 yard kickoff return by Dion Futch (junior/ Hampton, VA). Futch's return put the Trojans in good field position with the second quarter winding down. Green completed a 42 yard pass completion to Futch placing the Trojans on the Tigers 10 yard line, setting up first and goal for VSU. The Trojans continued to rush the football behind Wilson and he made it into the end zone on third and goal from the three yard line, giving VSU a 20-10 lead with 2:50 left in the half. Defensively, the Trojans held the Tigers to 29 first half rushing yards. VSU collected 233 total yards in the first half (86 rushing, 147 passing). Quarterback LaMonta Green completed 10 of 15 passes and added a 26 yard touchdown all in the first half.

The Trojans expanded their lead to 23-10 over the Tigers on a 22 yard made field goal at the 7:07 mark in the third quarter. VSU's defense forced another three and out, while their offense continued to collect yards. Quarterback LaMonta Green completed two more passes in the third quarter including a 44 yard strike to wide receiver Ja'von Smallwood (freshman/ Virginia Beach, VA) for a touchdown. VSU took a 30-10 lead with 2:29 remaining in the third quarter.

VSU collected a season-high 379 total yards against Benedict.  The Trojans rushed for 149 yards with two touchdowns averaging 3.7 yards per carry. Lamont Britt (red-shirt freshman/ Norfolk, VA) led the Trojans with 58 rushing yards while Tyler Wilson added 46 yards with two scores. In the air, VSU threw for a season-high 230 yards averaging 9.2 yards per pass. Green completed 12 of 19 pass attempts for a total of 206 yards and two touchdowns. Wide receiver Dion Futch hit the century mark in receiving yards with seven receptions for 100 yards receiving.

Defensively, Bryce Willoughby (senior/ Fort Washington, MD) collected 6 tackles (four solo, 2 assisted) to lead the Trojans. Willoughby recovered a fumble that was forced by Devonte Piggot (red-shirt freshman/ Woodbridge, VA). Piggott contributed with five tackles (four solo, one assisted) and added a sack for a loss of two yards. Sean Smith impacted the game on special teams and also with an interception in the fourth quarter. Smith recorded four solo tackles but gave the Trojans great field position with 85 total yards in returns (60 kick return, 25 punt return).

The Trojans (1-2) will travel to Charlotte, NC on Saturday, September 22 to go against Johnson C. Smith University, opening up CIAA conference play in their next game.
