Lady Trojans Tennis Win Two Straight at CIAA Round-Up

Virginia State University's women's tennis team defeated both Saint Augustine's and Fayetteville State on Saturday, March 10 in Ettrick, VA, picking up their first wins of the season. The Lady Trojans shut out the Lady Falcons of Saint Augustine's 9-0 and then breezed through the Lady Broncos of Fayetteville State 8-1.

Zaire Simmons (freshman/ Sandy's, Bermuda) defeated both Saint Augustine's and Fayetteville State's number two single players. She dropped her match to Shaw (1-6, 0-6) against J. Medina. Simmons went 2-1 at the Round-Up and also composed a record of 2-1 in double play along with teammate Amanda Spencer.

Amanda Spencer (sophomore/ Los Angeles) went against Saint Augustine's Minyan Murphy and won 6-3, 6-1 on Saturday, March 10. Spencer plays the number one singles position for the Lady Trojans and fought hard against the Southern team's number one positions, but dropped two matches against Shaw and Fayetteville State over the weekend.

Nakesha Harry (freshman/ Queens, NY) played in the number three position and went 2-1 in singles play at the Round-Up. She defeated the Lady Falcons' Roxanne Smith (6-0, 6-0) and the Lady Broncos' Samantha Ledbetter (6-1, 6-1), but fell to the Lady Bears' Claudia Silva (0-6, 1-6).

Sharmane Tonkins (freshman/ Newport News, VA) teamed up with Nakesha Harry in doubles play, then went on to beat Saint Augustine's and Fayetteville State's second position doubles pair. Tonkins fared well in singles competition with wins over both the Lady Falcons and Lady Broncos number four singles.

Valencia Williams (junior/ Norfolk, VA) also went 2-1 this past weekend in singles play with wins over the Lady Falcons' Lakesha Fowler (6-0, 6-0) and the Lady Broncos' Jasmine White (6-0,6-1). Valencia lost to Aline Ferreria from Shaw (0-6, 0-6).

Alexis McDowell (freshman/ Suffolk, VA) picked up the Lady Trojans only win against the Lady Bears of Shaw on Friday, March 9th. McDowell played the number six position and defeated Desiree Bell (6-3, 6-3). She also teamed up with Valencia Williams in doubles play against Shaw, but lost 2-8 to the duo of Claudia Silva and Sade Thomas.

The Lady Trojans will travel to Charlotte, NC this weekend to play Johnson C. Smith and Livingstone on Friday March 16th and the defending CIAA Champion Winston-Salem State on March 17th.
