David Brown

David Brown joins Virginia State University’s track and field staff as Assistant Jumps Coach at the start of the 2025/26 season. Since arriving in the Land of Troy, he has taken on a multifaceted role within the Trojans’ program, supporting recruitment, training, and athlete development for the jumps and multi-events groups.

Assisting in the field, he collaborates with the head coach to guide the men’s and women’s jumps squads through practice and competition preparation, emphasizing technical precision, biomechanics, and mental resilience. His prior experience as a high-level jumper has bolstered previous programs, contributing to improved personal records for over 90% of the student-athletes while maintaining or elevating their GPAs as well. Under his guidance, groups have produced multiple NCAA West Prelim qualifiers, Big 12 Indoor and Outdoor scorers, and a Big 12 Outdoor Champion, with standout improvements including a two-foot triple jump gains in half a season and numerous All-American honors.

As an athlete, Brown was a standout jumper across three programs, earning 12 All-American and All-Conference accolades. At Texas A&M University (2011-2013), he secured the 2013 NCAA Outdoor Regional Championship and Second Team All-American status in the triple jump with a personal best of 53 feet, ranking seventh on the Aggies’ all-time list, while helping the team to top national finishes. He continued his success at the University of Houston (2014-2015) as the 2015 American Athletic Conference Champion and NCAA West Regional Qualifier in the triple jump, plus First Team All-Conference in both jumps indoors and outdoors. Earlier at the University of New Mexico (2010-2011), he earned All-Mountain West honors in the triple and long jumps.

Following his collegiate career, Brown volunteered as a jumps coach at the University of Oklahoma (2015-2017), where he recruited record-setting student-athletes like the program’s all-time top triple and high jumpers.  He also coached at Cameron Yoe High School (2014-2015) where he had similar success. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Sociology with a minor in Health from the University of Houston and holds a USTFCCCA 251 Coaching Certification.
