Roosevelt Cooper, Jr.

Roosevelt Cooper, Jr. completed his first season as Virginia State University's Assistant Men's and Women's Tennis Coach in 2022-23.

Assisting Head Head Men's and Women's Tennis Coach Chavez Mabry, the Trojans were Northern Division Champions in the conference after a 12-4 overall record and a 9-1 mark in CIAA action. Assiting the men's team, the Trojans went 0-10.

In 2018, Roosevelt created his own company, Mobile Tennis Academy, LLC. His academy has helped to make over 15 tournament champions in four years. He has helped mold three top-300 junior tennis players in the area. His most recent coaching success was coaching/mentoring rising star Kayla Kennedy to win the VHSL State Championship in 2022.

Roosevelt also spent time coaching at Indian River High School where he helped the team earn a 6-3 record, which was the team’s first winning record in 10 years. The rest of the season was unfortunately stifled due to poor weather conditions. However, he managed to lead a team that qualified for regionals for the first time in history.

Roosevelt played the Futures and Challengers Circuit, making it into the Top 500 USTA Men’s Tennis National Rankings, at position #351 from 2013-2016. During this time, he was also nominated to be a hitting partner for The Citi Open 500 event where he trained with Sloane Stephens, Grigor Dmitrov, Wayne Odesnik, Michael Russell, Marco Chuidinelli, Robert Farah, Sam Groth, Magdaléna Rybáriková, Ekaterina Makarova, and Heather Watson.

Roosevelt attended Woodrow Wilson High School and was a finalist in the DCIAA High School Championship during his Junior and Senior years in 2006-2007. In 2007, he earned an opportunity to play Division I Tennis at Norfolk State University, where he played positions four, five, and six. During his time at NSU, he received academic honors and Most Improved Player of the Year. He also posted an undefeated doubles record in his senior year in 2012.

Roosevelt Cooper Jr. was born and raised in Washington, DC metropolitan area. He grew up training at the Washington Tennis and Education Foundation, which is home to the Citi Open, formerly known as the Legg Mason Tennis Classic Tour 500 event.
